Once regarded as one of the most congested traffic areas in the entire state, Knightdale has been transformed into a region of easy access and opportunity. Long gone are the days when tractor trailers and commuters funneled through Knightdale to navigate the only stoplights remaining on US 64/264 between I-95 and Raleigh's I-440 Betline. With the opening of the US 64/264 Bypass in 2005, the old business route through town was given a new lease on life as "Knightdale Boulevard." Whereas the boulevard once divided Knightdale, its transformation into a beautifully landscaped and thriving commercial corridor is a focal point that brings the community together.
While local travel and access to I-95 and points east had been improved, access to the region's western points of interest remained difficult due to heavy traffic around Raleigh's I-440 Beltline. This remaining obstacle was quickly overcome by the completion of East Wake Expressway (2007) which extended I-540 from US 1/Capital Boulevard near the Town of Wake Forest to the new US 64/264 Bypass in Knightdale. Along with dramatically improved travel times to Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Research Triangle Park, I-540's interchange at Knightdale Boulevard became Knightdale's "front" door -- the primary gateway for locals and vistors alike.
Today, Knightdale is one of the most attractive locations in the state for new residents as evidenced by the annual increase in the number of people who choose to relocate within its limits. Undoubtedly, much of the attraction can be attributed to the improved accessibility as it relates to the broader Triangle job market, regional recreation areas, world-renowned beaches and vacation spots, top-notch healthcare, and institutions of higher learning. When combined with local officials' commitment to build community that espouses the best of both "town" and "country," Knightdale is poised for continued growth and prosperity.
